At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Schouler as the former Adjutant General of Massachusetts. Two volume history. First volume published 1868, second volume 1871. First volume has 670 pages and the second volume has 711 pages. First volume published by E.P. Dutton & Co. and second volume published by the author at 39 Kilby Street in Boston. Both volumes stereotyped in Cambridge, Massachusetts by John Wilson and Son. First volume dedicated to Levi Lincoln and second to Harrison Gray Otis. Engraving of Governor John A. Andrews opposite the title page of first volume. Preface of first volume says "that one volume should be devoted exclusively to the three years' regiments, and one to the cities and towns." First volume has 12 chapters, covering the commonwealth and some troops from 1860 to the end of the Civil War and is signed on the inside cover "George [illegible]." Second volume is divided into 15 chapters, one for each county in the commonwealth. Each town in the county is discussed within its chapter. Between the contents and page 1 is a foldout color map of Massachusetts. Index on pages 707-711. Second volume also signed on inside front cover with "George [illegible]." Both volumes are in a green cloth cover.
