At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One bill of sale dated March 22, 1810 signed by William Payne and John Moncrieffe. The document details that two enslaved people named, Peggy and Hager were sold for $438.51 to Johnathan Lucas. Moncrieffe, the attorney for George P. Cosseral and his wife, arranged the sale for the Cosserals who were in England. Printed by G. M. Bounetheau. State seal of South Carolina printed at the top of the document. Fragile.
