Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reproduction (woodcut) of a drawing. Depicts an old, haggard woman standing behind a young woman. Caption states "Let us see if this can be reproduced." A note in pencil states "Original drawing by Thackery?" Possibly reproduced after Thackery's death in the 1870s.

Thackeray was a nineteenth century British novelist, satirist, and illustrator. He contributed to various serial publications and gained popularity after his novel Vanity Fair was published in 1848.
