At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Advice to West Point Cadet James Trooper Armstrong concerning studies and subordination. Hopes that Armstrong will follow after his father General Robert Armstrong, and his grandfather, John Armstrong Jr.

Robert Armstrong served under Jackson in the War of 1812, and later became a general and a close friend.
John Armstrong Jr. was the Secretary of War during the War of 1812.

"You are aware how much solicitude I have that you should graduate with honor & be prepared to sustain the high military character that your father has obtained by his bravery, and honorable bearing in the last Indian & British War - - keep his, & your Grandfathers, military feelings & conduct allways [sic] in view, and you will realise the best hopes & wishes of all your friends."
