At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Co-signed by Thomas Seymour. Requests payment of 180 pounds for Chappel to enable him to raise a crew of seamen for naval service on the lakes in the north which should be charged to the state of Connecticut. Signed on reverse by Chappel stating he received from state Treasurer John Lawrence 180 pounds on 17 August 1776. Audited by J. Treadwell on 1 September 1777.
