Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mostly various cleaning, mending, and chimney sweeping activities. One entry for "Drawing Tooth for your Negro." Accounts from 1766-1770, and two from 1774. A 12 April 1785 note on the verso indicates that Champlin personally verified the account and another note dated 5 May 1787 and signed by Champlin indicates he received the account. J. Barker attests that Champlin has made the claim under oath.
