Written when Long commanded the 2nd brigade, 2nd division of Cavalry, Army of the Cumberland. Documents Long's service, beginning with his graduation from the Kentucky Military Institute in 1855. Notes his pre-war service, and a post at Fort Riley, Kansas. Remarks, "In my service in the west I think I can safely say that I did as hard duty and as much of it as any Officer of my Regiment." Went to Kentucky for service in February 1862. Mentions Generals Buell, Rosecrans, Stanley, and Crook, among others. Cites the battles of Corinth, Perryville, Chaplin Hill, and Murfreesboro. Writes, "It is with some pride that I can say that, since this Regt came into the States... to the Battle of Stones River, I did as much for it by drilling it and instructing the younger officers as any other person." Cites his skill in capturing prisoners. Notes, "During the time that I have been in the Service I have never received aught but [struck: praise of] approval from my commanding officers both as regards my general conduct and when I had anything of importance to do..." Seeks appointment to the position of Brigadier General.
In August 1864, Long was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers. Library of Congress lists George Crook's dates as 1829-1890, but other list his birth year as 1828.
