Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cleveland is in the process of applying for appointment as British Consul and has asked Lawton for a recommendation. Lawton questions his own former position as Quarter Master in the Confederacy would not aid the application.

Lawton was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives and Senate prior to the Civil War. He was a general in the Confederate Army.
