Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

All 6 of these letters are written from New Berne, North Carolina (written as "New Berne" or "Newberne"), to his sister back in Connecticut. Davis is wounded 8 February 1862 at Roanoke Island, and writes in detail of this battle and of his wound; but he is not discharged until October 1864, after serving his three years.
