Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General Banks informs Miss Worth of Albany, New York that "The Ladies of the North were gratefully and enthusiastically remembered by the soldiers in the Hospitals of this Department on Christmas Day ... The sweetest earthly solace that a stricken soldier can receive is to know that the women of his Country appreciate his sacrifices and are willing to give their hours of leisure and luxury to his care and comfort ... "
