Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Has long intended to write and thank Mrs. Montgomery for her kind words during Lucy's time of distress, but has been unready to think about the difficult situation until the present time. Discusses her feelings about the death of her son. Comments that she has found solace in writing this letter, but apologizes for inflicting all of her emotional distress on Mrs. Montgomery. Suggests that Mrs. Montgomery comes to visit.
