Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signature, possibly of Christopher Gore, has been clipped. Also signed by William Hay and by John Trumbull as witness. Contract between the American Christopher Gore, living in London, and William Hay, a London gardener. Enumerates the terms of employment for Hay, as Gore's gardener: specifies that Hay will travel to the United States and work on Gore's land under the supervision of a William Payne.
