Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Noted as a copy. Speaks of his past services to Knox. Appears to be seeking employment from Knox either in training "young" men in the military or receiving a captain's commission in the Artillery. Requests Knox gives his letter to the current Secretary of War. Henley also included a letter from Knox written on 7 February 1799 which recommends Henley for a Majority or Captain's position. Docket notes, "David Henley."
