Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Will of Lucy Knox, leaving the majority of her property to her children, Henry Jackson Knox, Lucy Flucker Knox Thatcher, and Caroline Fisher Knox Swan. Certified as a true copy by John H. Sheppard, Registrar. Signatures of Lucy Knox, and the witnesses Samuel S. Wilde, John Gleason, and William McLellan all appear in the hand of Sheppard.
