Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Major General Foster writes to Morgan, Governor of New York. Recommends Lieutenant Daniel Webster Flagler of the Ordnance Corps for command of one of the regiments being raised by New York State. Writes "I have seen him Constantly, & in many different positions since the sailing of the 'Burnside Expedition' & in justice & all sincerity must say- that he is fully qualified for any position you may be willing to give him..."

Morgan served as Governor of New York 1859-1862. "The Burnside Expedition" refers to General Ambrose Burnside's expedition to General Ambrose Burnside's 1862 expedition on the coast of North Carolina; one aspect of this expedition was an attack on Roanoke Island and its dependencies.
