Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mansfield informs Thomas, Adjutant General for the United States, that he accepts the appointment of Brevet Brigadier General conferred upon him from the United States President (Abraham Lincoln). Accepts the title "with the hope that in so doing I can better serve my country in the trying circumstances in which it is placed."
