Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tells his brother not to worry about catching the mumps or measles. Says Linton might as well catch the mumps now, while it is so prevalent, and get it over with, since it can be easily and safely treated. Also mentions his plans to return home. Docket in pencil, recently added.

Alexander H. Stephens was the Vice President of the Confederacy.
Linton A. Stephens was a State Senator in Georgia, Confederate officer, and the half brother of Alexander H. Stephens.
