Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Begins in Fort Yuma. Describes weather and what he and officers do in their leisure hours such as play cribbage. Goes to San Francisco in September. Then boards the Steamer Constitution. Lands in New York in October and goes to Brooklyn. Talks about mother and Johnny. Does some accounting in the back.
