Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks Burr to write a letter to Thomas J. Rusk, even though he had previously asked Gideon Welles to do so. Also asks Burr to send him the "piece you spoke of in the Times, the Santa Anna letter, and the last 'Times'."

Alfred Burr was publisher of the Hartford Daily Times for sixty one years, and a major figure in Connecticut politics.
Gideon Welles (1802-1878) was another Connecticut journalist and politician. He later became Secretary of the Navy under President Lincoln.
Thomas J. Rusk (1803-1857) was one of the two original senators from Texas. The other was Sam Houston. Rusk served in the Senate up until his death.
