Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Includes a list of all the men in company J and whether they are on duty, sick or discharged. For the moment it is warm and pleasant Recently they had a very hard march.

Enlisted in the Union Army on 10 October 1861at Monticello, New York as a Private. On 10 October 1861 he mustered into "K" Co. New York 56th Infantry. He was discharged for disability on 4 March 1863 at New Berne, North Carolina. He died 8 July 1863.
