Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection includes nine letters, one newspaper clipping with ribbon, one diary, one ledger, and one photograph. Four envelopes are included. Letters are written from various people and include recommendations for Clegg, reflections of the War, and various other topics. Diary mostly consists of entries on camp life, marching, and some fighting.
