My Dear Brother,
I received your letter last night and was very glad to hear from you and to know that your pain is better than it was. I am also glad that you hear Sister Matilda as often as you say you do, I very sorry to hear that Johnny was sick, I hope he will recover before this reaches you, tell Johnny that I have some balls that I could send him if I knew how to send them, if I can see anyone going to Wilmington I will try and send some off. The boys will go before long and if you will tell me what part of the city to tell those that will carry them, I can send them if I get a chance I will send them and write at the same time. Johnny is a nice little fellow and Henry Role, I think a great of them. When you write to Pittsburgh tell Sister to write to me. I have writen to her since I left there, everything is quiet here now but do not no how long it will remain so.
When you see Mr. Hicks give him my respects when you home to Pittsburg give my love to all and do not forget to mention Miss Mary C. for she is a charming girl. I have heard nothing more from Portsmouth only all news from ladies here been required to take the oath. I intend to write home tomorrow and if you want to write send it to me and I will send on to Petersburg to Frank Benson and he will attend to it. Give my love to Mr. and Mrs. Cowain and Johnny, write soon. Good by from aff. Brother.
