Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Nathaniel R. Davison writes to his sister, Sallie, and her children from Goldsboro, NC. He speaks of Union troops advancing toward Kinston, NC, and he describes life in camp, including the mild winter and his commissary duties. Davison writes that he almost got married and asks about the engagement of his friends, Kate and Jim Finley.
