Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tells Blair that he has been deemed deficient in his French exam at West Point Military Academy, and asks for Blair to intercede on his behalf, so that he might be reinstated, and continue at school. Jackson cannot understand how he did so poorly, and tries to assure Blair that he has been a good student and well behaved. Calls on Blair as an old friend of the family to do him this favor. Jackson would eventually graduate from West Point.

Andrew Jackson Jr. (1834-1926) was the son of President Jackson's wife's nephew, Andrew Jackson (1809-1865), whom the President Andrew Jackson and his wife had adopted. Jackson Jr. continually failed to live up to the high hopes of his father, and was constantly in debt.
Francis P. Blair was the publisher of the Globe, the official paper of the Democratic party for fifteen years.
