At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Buckner, a Confederate general, signs as Lieutenant General Commanding the District of Western Louisiana. Writes to Union Major General Canby commanding the Military Division of Western Mississippi, in New Orleans to propose the special exchange of a prisoner now in the Trans Mississippi Department for 1st Lieutenant William D. Chipley, Adjutant in the 9th Kentucky Militia Infantry, now confined at Johnson's Island. Chipley was taken as a POW on 22 July 1864 at Intrenchment Creek, Georgia.
