Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Forwards to Nichols money to be invested and gives instructions specifying what companies in which to invest. Directs that he wants his funds invested, " ... as if I was sure of the permanency and good credit of the government, for my confidence in that result is unlimited." Ends by discussing war matters and states, "What brilliant news we are receiving; [Jefferson] Davis and [Union General George] McClellan will hardly be able to withstand many more such victories of the Republic. Let the tide of victory roll on in Virginia and Georgia and the rebels will hardly be able to defeat us in any of the loyal states." Written on stationery of Headquarters Draft Rendezvous, Hart Island, N.Y.

Hincks was a Union General and Commander of Camp Lookout prison April - May 1864. He led a Negro division in the Petersburg siege. He also served on court martial and recruiting duties intermittently. Nichols was a Cambridge Massachusetts Commission merchant.
