At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Published by J. Walter & Co. in Ohio. Vallandigham signs 19 January 1864 in Windsor, Ontario, where he was living in exile.

Vallandigham was a United States Representative from Ohio 1857-1862. He was arrested by the Union military authorities in 1863 for treasonable utterance and banished to the Confederate States.
