Writes that his regiment has been building corduroy roads and gabions. Notes that some people are making "queer remarks" about General Peck. One man said that he hoped that General Peck was killed and went to hell before the soldier did. That way, Peck would get there first and have it so well fortified that the solider would not be able to get in.
Camp in the Field May 2, 1863
Dear All, The chaplain is just ready to start for town & my letter is not written so I write just a line to say I am very well. I have been intending to write each day but have put it off for nearly a week I think I am sorry but nothing special has taken place. Part of the time has been very stormy and our chief occupation has been building corduroy roads & gabions by day & working on the forts at night. The work goes on rain or shine. Some queer remarks are made at Genl Peck's expense - one I must write. I heard it this morning. One of the men said he hoped Genl Peck would be killed for if he (Genl P.) went to - hell - before he did, he (Genl P) would have it so strongly fortified that he was sure he could not get in. I could not help writing that. Expect to write more immediately. Recd yours of 28th Ch
