Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed document signed by New Hampshire Governor Gilmore and Secretary of State Allen Tenney. Alfred Marland, Justice of the Peace, attests to Sarsons' taking of the oaths of allegience on 23 May 1865. With a red seal intact. Printed state seal on top section. Red pen with writing: "Duplicate" written across Gilmore and Tenney's signatures. Originally folded into eighths.

Captain Eleazer Sarsons joined Company F, 4th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment as a private in 1861 and later served as the First Sergeant in the Company F, 4th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment.
