Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One image of a Philadelphia railyard with President Lincoln's Funeral Train dated April 22, 1865. The image was taken by McCleas. The engine bears four U.S. flags and black funeral drapings. Two men sit atop the tender that has the inscription, "PENN. R.R." Small crowds are also photographed at the front and back of the train.
