Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This document is a map of the United States, Mexico, and Caribbean territories belonging to George Cadwalader. Includes original holding case with "Cadwalader" inscription, which resembles a small book with a white binding ribbon. Map folds to 11.2 x 7.1 cm. Currently mounted, dimensions including mounting are 45.3 x 60.7 cm.

Cadwalader was present at the battles of Molino del Rey and Chapultepec, and was brevetted major general for gallantry in the latter engagement.
