A photograph album of the West Point graduating class of 1861 which belonged to Cadet Joseph B. Campbell. Attributed to George C. Rockwood. The album includes albumen images of the seventeen instructors and thirty-six cadets of the United States Military Academy plus two additional persons. It contains handsome images of great Civil War leaders such as John F. Reynolds and William J. Hardee. The photograph of a cocky, clean-shaven Cadet George A. Custer may be the earliest image of him in uniform, reproduced in Katz, p. 3, K-2. All photographs have been attached to mounts and annotated in ink with the name of the individual. Some photographs also indicate as state of origin, affiliation during the Civil War, and battle and date of the soldier's death. The volume includes a rare portrait of Joseph Gardner Swift (1783-1865) at the end of the volume. Swift's class, graduating 10/12/1802 is regarded as the first graduating class.
