Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of seven men (six white and one African-American), in civilian dress posed in front of a small wooden building. "Sibley" tents in left background. Previous title for this item called these men spies, however research has not uncovered any evidence of this. It is not impossible, however it is not proven either. Verso notation: "VI" "553"
