Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of the Headquarters of the Army of the Potomac, featuring the cabin of General Rufus Ingalls. Graphite inscription on verso: "Quarters of General Ingalls & Col. Platt, Headquarters, Army of Potomac, Brandy Station 1863 -4." Well constructed winter quarters consisting of log cabins with plank roofs and tents. Zouave soldiers [114th Penn.] and standard Union soldiers stand outside the cabins. Trees visible in foreground and background.
