Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Maquette comprised of 7 cartes de visite of naval admirals who served in the Union Forces during the American Civil War and 2 separate oval pieces of scalloped paper inscribed with the words "Naval" and "Heroes." Each carte de visite is pasted on scalloped paper. Produced by Mathew Brady's studio to be photographed and published in a reduced size as its own carte de visite. 6 of the admirals are identified by surname, including Stephen Clegg Rowan, David Dixon Porter, John Rodgers, Samuel Francis Dupont, David Farragut, and John A. Dahlgren. The remaining uncaptioned portrait is that of Admiral Andrew Hull Foote.
