Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Taken by O'Sullivan. Frassanito states that this is the earliest known photograph of the gatehouse after the battle. The artillery earthworks occupied by Stewart's Battery B, 4th U.S. Arty. can be seen in the foreground. Seated in the wagon that is on the Baltimore Pike are a few of the many civilians that would flock to the battlefield shortly after the fighting was over.
