Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Same image as #615, but the print is cut smaller. A man in civilian dress stands in the trench supported by logs and support beams. Inscription on top of image in Fay's handwriting: "Earthworks in front of Petersburg. Federal lines at Fort Norton. P.46." The numbers "1069" and "388" do not appear in this image, that part has been trimmed off. There is a notation of "1069" written in the lower left corner of the image. Formerly part of H.W. Fay's ("Keeper of Lincoln's Tomb") scrapbook.
