The photo shows a dead Confederate soldier, probably killed by a fragment of a nearby shell explosion. The photo was taken the day after the storming of Petersburg, VA, on April 3,1865. Inscription on verso: "Dead Confederate soldier in the trenches." Numeric notations on verso: "68" and "363."
