Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mentions how much the children must have grown. Talks about selling all his equipment; boilers, engines, pipe tools, etc. States he will enclose a money order with this letter. First page is written in very light pencil, and there is bleedthrough from the ink on the other side making it difficult to read. With letter to his wife Mary of the same date (see GLC05245.18.01).
