Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Howes 26 (related). Printed for Flexney, Holborn; Davies, Russel-Street; Merril, Cambridge; and Eddowes, Shrewsbury. Lord Erskine's copy with publisher's printed dedication. Thomas Erskine, 1750-1823, brother of David Steuart Erskine (11th Earl of Buchan, who corresponded with Lady Catharine Macaulay) contributed to passing Fox's Libel Act in 1792 which helped to blunt the use of libel prosecutions by the Pitt ministry. With bookplate of Gertrude Hamilton on front pastedown.
