Chase, Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, replies to a letter from Jones, a judge and former United States Representative from Pennsylvania. States that his own acquaintances in Philadelphia are nearly completely social. Expresses interest in the political climate in the county where Jones resides (possibly Berks County, Pennsylvania).

Chase served as United States Senator from Ohio 1849-1854 and 1861-1862, Governor of Ohio 1855-1857, Secretary of the Treasury 1861-1864, and Chief Justice 1864-1873. Jones served as United States Representative 1851-1858, and as Minister to Austria 1858-1861.

"I return your letter as requested...At present I am unable to interest any one with whom you can confer on the subject you mention. It is not impossible that I may after a few days [2] I was exceedingly interested in your observations on the population of your county in respect to origin & present relations. What light such an account of all the counties in the several states, would shed upon history & present conditions. [Johnson's ?] speech was very able; but it seemed to me not exactly democratic in the sense of equal & exact justice for all men - the only foundative principle of real Democracy."
