Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Holabird, Chief Quartermaster of the Department of Louisiana, informs Colonel Pierce (possibly an inspector in the Department of the Quartermaster) that "The officer who superintended & made the sales of Cotton called for by you is imprisoned & his papers are under seizure." Written on Office of the Chief Quarter-Master for the Department of the Gulf stationery.
