Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General U. S. Grant and the Army of the Potomac at Cold Harbor and City Point in 1864. Album of Large photographs all taken in the field by Mathew Brady's studio. The album was assembled by British General Sir Charles Hastings Doyle, who was sent by the British government on a "Confidential" visit to General Grant's headquarters.
