Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Large and vigorous recruitment broadside printed on thin bright yellow paper with large woodcut of American flag, with streaming ribbon reading "Stand by the Flag." Captain Jesse E. George. Lists bounties and army pay. Printed at the Tri-Weekly Publisher Office, Haverhill. The recruiting office is written in pencil (and partially overwritten in crayon for legibility) "A. C. Clemonts Store, Plaistow, N. H."
