Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed photograph of Grant as Lt. General, taken by Frederick Gutekunst. Standing portrait of General Grant with his left hand in his vest, taken in the spring of 1865. Grant is wearing a black mourning band on his left arm in remembrance of Abraham Lincoln, who had recently been assassinated. Verso contains docket with autograph note signed by J. Harper and plate of Pittsburgh bookseller. Harper's note states that he got the autograph from Grant himself, and is giving it to a friend, Mrs. Chuffat. Same photograph as GLC01320.01.
