Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Four pages extracted from Stauffer's sketchbook. Consists of watercolor sketches of a men; some are rough and others have been colored in. First page identifies the subjects of the portraits as "Jac. Grosse," "P.P. Todd," and "J.C.S." The last page features a man in a black coat and top hat as G.D. Miller.
