Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Regarding friction in the early 19th century America and the rise of various secession movements. In part: "That a few mad or unfortunate persons of the old federal party might have thought of dissolving the confederacy, is despicable enough; but I never thought they could have carried the population of the New England States with them in such a treasonable and suicidal measure."
