At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to a fellow student about how he misses college life at South Carolina College. Asks him to get his room and bed ready for when he returns in April. Says he is convalescing from an illness and discusses the health of other members of his family that are convalescing with him. Hutson graduated from South Carolina College in 1859. Hutson was a Corporal, 1st South Carolina Infantry, during the Civil War.
