Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Says he tried to write earlier but could not finish. Speaks of the illness of a friend Marion. Reports that the Heyward and Martin and Wyman cases are still pending. Mentions a bridal party that is on their way to Orangeburgh. States the Elliots went to Charleston. Asks Charley to sell his bed and mattress and gives selling prices. Hutson graduated from South Carolina College in 1859.
