Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter from Hutson's brother enclosed with the one from his cousin informed Hutson of the death of their father, Richard Woodward Hutson (1788-1866). Recalls emotional partings with his father during the Civil War. Reports that he unsuccessfully attempted to send his correspondent a long letter, and will write at length soon. Gives family news. Hutson was a Corporal, 1st South Carolina Infantry, during the Civil War.
